“I have tears running down my cheeks. I just finished reading my good friend Jana Roe’s book. I am soooooo proud of her bravery, authenticity, and beautiful message offering others hope that whatever someone is going through, they have the ability to change their lives!!! HOW POWERFUL IS THAT????? I am humbled that she included me in her dedication and a chapter in her book. I remember the conversation well that we shared on a car ride but had absolutely no idea that it wouldplant a seed to some day be a story she would tell to so many and in doing so, CHANGING LIVES!!! Jana is moving mountains with her message and I encourage you to read the book and look within to see what mountains in your life need to be moved. YOU have the power to change!!! To be real and authentic myself, I can share that I also grew up baking in the sun using baby oil. We didn’t know better. I also used a tanning bed before trips to get a base coat. I gave those things up and now use non-toxic sunscreen, wear hats almost all the time, have annual skin checks and hope this message gets out to save others from pain or worse. I lost my dad to squamous cell carcinoma in January, 2005. It was the hardest thing to go through and still hurts when I think back on it. I am so happy Jana pushed through the pain and challenges to come out victorious!!! I have to share something very personal. I have a condition called Hemochromatosis, not contagious, but could be dangerous if not kept in check. It has to do with my body storing iron in the wrong way and the potential to damage my organs. One side affect, my skin goes bronze easily in the sun, even in a short period of time. I have actually been able to help several other people get diagnosed and they are now aware and taking care of their condition. While I don’t share this often but really should, I want people to know I take skin cancer seriously. This book is powerful and so much more than a story about addiction or cancer. It’s a story about being real, connecting with others, sharing your story so others can hear and heal, and knowing we are not alone in our struggles. Thank you Jana for sharing your story and being so brave. You are beautiful inside and out! I am in awe of you!!!!”
“As a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, I help people with lifestyle changes, whatever they may be. After reading Jana Roe’s BURNED, My Journey Through Addiction, I find myself wanting to recommend this book to everyone. While the book focuses on the author battling her addiction to tanning and enduring rigorous skin treatments for cancer, it is so much more than a book about addiction or surviving cancer. The bottom line is about self-acceptance, self-worth, and self-love. This seems to be a universal problem that many can relate to.Jana is brave, raw, and vulnerable sharing personal thoughts and feelings regarding her addiction stemming from low-self esteem. The real story is in the ability for anyone to be their own hero. Jana is resilient and perseveres in a fight for her life while discovering her worth and value are not attached to any physical traits or appearances but rather her ability to lover herself enough to turn the ship around. In doing so, she finds a voice and platform for sharing her story in hopes of helping others. The beautiful letters she shares from students reveal the power of her message and beauty of being authentic. This book offers readers hope that change CAN happen and that is a priceless gift!”
“I couldn’t put your book down. Just finished it. I had no idea how much you’ve endured! Keep telling your story... it’s so important & I will never go out without sunscreen again!”
“I too just got done reading Jana’s book! I’m so very proud that you could overcome your addiction!!!! One also like Jana found that God had another plan for her.....to teach others by speaking and writing a book. Like Jana said, no one knows what a person is going through except yourself! People need to take more time for themselves and know themselves!!! If ever anyone has a little voice speaking to you it’s usually not good and seek help right away! Jana, thank you for being the strong person you are and for going to the top of that rope sort a speak and not sliding down into the depths of destruction!!! Great job! Love you!!!!!”
“As I read a friend’s new book that she wrote, I deeply regret my tanning habits of my past. I would do things so differently today. I recommend this book to anyone, including youth. Dermatologist appointment for me, soon, as I’m overdue anyway. Thank you, Jana, for sharing your story. I’m sorry for everything you’ve endured along the way😞”
“Read your book cover to cover on my flight and found it riveting. Your transitions between chapters were very well crafted and it is a sober reminder that you should always wear sunscreen because our sun is both a friend and potential nemesis. I am more diligent now when golfing and applaud your courage to face the issue head-on. My father used the same cream but never spoke about the pain and I now understand more of his “quiet” suffering. May you finally leave your symptoms and skin manifestations behind. ”
“I want to share a link for an incredibly inspirational story written by my dear friend (and “sister), Jana Roe. Her book BURNED describes her journey through addiction, cancer, and faith; hers is a story of strength and victory! Jana is one of the bravest women I’ve ever had the privilege of calling my friend. She is truly an Over-comer, even as her journey continues to demand courage. Hearing that her book has touched others’ hearts is such a gift—and a reminder that the heartbreakingly beautiful story she shares continues to be used for a Greater Good. Please take a moment to consider someone you might know who has struggled to find a new identity free from addiction, or someone who might need the encouragement to keep fighting the good fight through a difficult season.”
“I finally finished reading your book. It is truly inspirational. It made me cry several times. My favorite chapter is 27. I could feel the power of your decision to share your story. I know you’re in a low place again now, but I think your doctor is right. You’re a warrior and you are winning each of these battles. ”
